Yet another diversion from the Hektor rebuilds, primarily this was because I now have 3 fully restored Hektors, but need to properly test the cassette interface. I have tested it with an MP3 recorder but wanted to be sure they all worked fine with the good old cassette player. More details on this soon.
OK, so back to the subject matter. I recently acquired an old Toshiba MSX machine, the HX-10, it had a few faults, mainly the keyboard had some 'misbehaving' keys, so, a full strip down restoration was called for. Oh, and to make matters worse, the reason I bought it was that it came with a cassette recorder..... guess what..... it didn't work, so, the project started with getting this working first. Overall the restoration was fairly straightforward, lots of cleaning, a gentle retrobrite as I didn't want to overdo it.

The keyboard had 40 years of dust, dna, hair, and other 'mystery' substances lodged, so, as I needed the keys off anyway...

and, without the keys

Is that a fingernail????

I decided to remove the fabric cover for a cold water wash with a mild detergent.

The main case, main board and transformer, etc, needed a really good wash too, all stripped out of the case and washed separately. Any connectors were treated with contact cleaner too.

All cleaned and reassembled, everything seems to test out ok too.

I even loaded up 'Galaxians'...... I totally forgot just how long it took to load a single game up....
